Review # 1 was written on 2007-12-03 00:00:00 Kris Sanders Such a great book! I work with an education nonprofit (City Year) in inner city Orlando. The situations Fader faced in DC in the 60's are unsettlingly familiar to those I encounter everyday in 2013 Orlando'minimal demand, students unwillingness to do work because of their lack of gratification deferment, lack of collective existence between schools and the communities they serve, an adversarial relationship between parents and teachers, undervalued teachers who do not see themselves as "agents if change" and therefore primarily seek short term successes. This book makes me want to work harder at transforming the education system in the United States into a system that (1) works with it's urban students and communities and (2) celebrates every possible success of those students and communities-no matter how small. |
