Review # 1 was written on 2015-06-17 00:00:00 Richard Balash Stephani, Main reference volunteer, June 2015, 5 stars: The book Dangerous Wildlife in the Southeast by Bachleda provides a thorough, informative, and sometimes even entertaining look into how to encounter flora and fauna in that region. It provides basic information on each of the animals/plants in addition to more detailed information for readers interested going more in depth on the subject. Bachleda covers many different species and even touches on some that I never knew were a threat to humans. (For example, I learned that shrews have a mild poison in their salvia that can make a human ill.) Her book gives very practical advice on topics such as encountering animals with automobiles, safely breaking up fights between pets and animals, and ridding your house of poisonous plants without risking your health in the process. She also informs the reader how to identify these creatures and to react when encountering these wildlife in the wild. At first glance, all this information can be overwhelming and a bit intimating. However, Bachleda strikes a rare balance between informing the reader on the very real dangers of wildlife in the Southeast and not scaring the reader into never leaving their house again! She provides statistics, which realistically show the slim chances of being attacked by a bear, snake, or shark. (Ticks and mice actually prove to be a more immediate and greater threat than any of those creatures!) I highly recommend reading/purchasing this book as an authoritative guide if you live or plan to visit the Southeast region of the United States! |
