Review # 1 was written on 2017-03-14 00:00:00 Brian Gantwerker This is a set of 26 essays on different aspects of music and performance, written by a professional musician. She writes really well, is occasionally amusing and regularly thought-provoking. She doesn't talk down to her 'audience' though it does require a certain element of knowledge about classical music and playing an instrument. I think I particularly enjoyed Q is for Quiet - very interesting comment on society's changing attitudes to the levels of sound and what makes for exciting/interesting listening. I'm quite sure my father will enjoy this book - it's a good mix of performer and philosopher. |
