Review # 1 was written on 2014-09-02 00:00:00 Felix Anstirman This is an outstanding book. Monastier does a spectacular job following the Vaudois throughout history, from the time of Constantine through the present. I don't know that all his arguments hold up. In tracing their history, he seems to be too quick to include every group that Rome persecuted during the Middle Ages. The one reason that this is not always tenable is that several of the groups Rome labeled "heretics" in the centuries under consideration were demonstrable anabaptists. But when the Waldenses met with the Reformers to compare notes, they found complete doctrinal agreement. The Reformers alway spoke highly of the Waldenses and always spoke harshly of the anabaptists. This consideration aside, this is an invaluable resource. Monastier obviously spent much time researching and studying medieval manuscripts. He plows through countless works and letter of various figures in Church history from the 4th through the 16th century following the plight of this remnant of God's faithful church amid the mass of false teaching which pervaded Christendom. And like Wylie's book on the same subject, he details the horrific persecution these poor saints endured at the hands of the papacy. |
