Includes a fifty page bibliography of works in English, translations and studies, organized by chapter and topic. The last chapter covers modern literature 1942-1990 in mainland China and Taiwan (the book was published in English in 1997) and is the one chapter that readers will almost certainly want to supplement with more recent and more detailed studies. |

After an introductory section discussing the concept of literature and other features of traditional Chinese society crucial to understanding its writings, the second part is broken into five major time periods and discusses the key literature found therein. |
