I'm currently cat sitting in San Francisco while its human hosts are abroad. I found this book amidst the thousands strewn all over the place and, having long been interested in the UFO and abduction phenomena, picked it up for its advertised critical stance. The author, an astronomy professor at UC Santa Cruz, treats of the reports from the perspective of contemporary physics, suggesting ways, compatible with our understanding of how things work, aliens might fulfill the observations of humans who claim to have witnessed them. A lot of this hinges upon quantum mechanics and string theory, neither of which are fields I well understand. A serious and respectful study, Alschuler has read a broad sampling of the literature, though I was surprised that he failed to address the physical arguments adduced by Stanton Friedman, another proponent of understanding UFOs in terms of contemporary physics. He does, however, credit the efforts of a goodly number of science fiction authors, those of the 'hard science' variety.

This book has been extremely helpful in my research for my YA Sci-Fi novel. I found it by chance, in a used book store, and it has been instrumental in helping me understand the science and theories behind time/space, dimensions, astronomy, etc., etc., even with some biology thrown in at the end, and in a clear and understandable way. It's like it was built just for someone like me, who really struggles to fully comprehend math and anything related, especially something as difficult as physics. These theories also jive with other research I've been doing, but helped me turn up the comprehension to a whole 'nother level with illustrative stories and easily imaginable visuals to help me 'get it'. The interesting thing is that I started reading the book several chapters in, because I jumped to a topic I wanted to know the most about right off the bat, and then went back to the beginning and started reading from there once I was already half-finished the book. From the language used throughout, I was surprised to learn that the author does not believe in UFOs, and even with him having said that, I felt that, from the tone, he really does, or really wants to, despite what he says. Either way, passion and research went into this carefully crafted 'guide', and I'm keeping it handy for quick future reference. Excellent work!
