This was a good first hand account of the Korean War. The reason that I bought this book was that my Grandfather and one of his close friends that I remember growing up as a kid, are mentioned throughout the book. If you want a really good picture about how we fumbled up the Korean War - what happened, and why; I recommend this along with "This Kind of War" by Fehrenbach...the later being a much more in-depth and objective account. If you are a member of the military, there are valuable lessons to be gleaned as it pertains to "what happens under bad leadership", along with what happens when the military bends to the political pressures born of popular opinion at home.

This was an interesting read, to say the very least. Strickland collects a number of life stories/oral histories from PNW characters, everyone from loggers to fish thieves to homesteaders, and from that creates a kind of history of the region from the early 20th Century. These characters and stories are one-of-a-kind and deserve the memorial he gives them. Maybe not the best sit down to read as one collection, but it's good material for people interested in the region, time period, and, like me, who write fiction that takes place in this era. It's like a time capsule.
