This is a solid, no-nonsense primer which would serve as an excellent introductory text to a novice, as well as a good reminder of the fundamentals for readers with a more advanced grasp of the subject.

Soggy with theory and inundated with a good 40-50 pages of unsolicited advice for the Israeli peace moment, Hermann's work is weighty and mildly uninteresting. The discussions of the history of various peace movements is illuminating, given their small size and often insignificant political weight. Peace Now, Brit Shalom, etc. these are all discussed here, albeit briefly, while the greater Israeli domestic political context is grafted onto them. Successes and failures, but mostly the latter, are discussed. Hermann makes some interesting observations on the "whys" of the peace movement's failure in Israel (collective nature of society; tendency of peace groups to be elite and educated) as well as the irony that subsequent Israeli governments of the right or left generally end up adopting the tenets of previously extant peace groups. Not bad, just not what one might expect.
