Review # 1 was written on 2018-02-05 00:00:00 Scott Bezio The Late Scholastic (S. XVI-XVII) made an important contribution to the science of Economics. Not many people acknowledge the work of the Christian Doctors of this time, this book helps in the understanding of their value. Adam Smith is known as the father of Economics but even he built on the ideas of previous generations. The link between modern Economics and the Late Scholastic is not crystal clear but Alejandro Chafuen makes an important job in establishing the relationship. The Late Scholastic is a long period of history with many important authors. Studying the Late Scholastic would required time and effort that Chafuen brilliantly summarizes in this book. In some topics they seem to be a unified school, while in others there are differences and evolution. Nevertheless, they built a system to explain Economics grounded on Catholic tradition and Natural Law and Aristotelian ideas. This book is quite relevant today when the heirs of the Catholic doctrine are the ones actively against the Private Property and the edifice that builds on it are. For the Catholic that is confused between the current authorities and his common sense this book can feed many answers. For all it is relevant as a summary of an undervalued era in human History. |
