The plays in Suburban Motel all have some kind of physical violence involved. And sometimes, characters eat take out food, have coitus. And take showers. Things that humans need and do especially to survive in a motel. Each play features a maximum of 4 characters at a time. I say at a time because some are recurring characters in other plays. So it's interesting to guess how much time has passed for Denise and R.J. after the events that took place in Problem Child and then, in Risk Everything. There are blends of comedic and tragic elements in each of the plays. The Dialogue feels conversational and real. Each character has a memorable way of speaking that distinguishes himself/herself/themselves from other characters in this anthology who share similar age and sex. The dialogue was written so well that I enjoyed every bit of family feuds and lovers' dramas all the way to the end of this collection. What is the significance of reusing the same motel room as the setting? This question could be complicated further by asking the same of the furniture and fixtures'the bathroom door, the window, the bed, the table'all key elements reused in most of the plays. The stage directions do not characterize inanimate objects with overly long descriptions. They are mentioned in passing as characters proceed. We must do a bit of guesswork with how the room will age, if we consider that these plays happen in the order they are structured in this collection. If I were to stage this collection in its entirety, I would have the walls receive Bullet holes during Criminal Genius and maintain such appearances in the next play, Featuring Loretta. And I'd laugh, because the preceding cast will be trying to make a porno in this same room that has a lot, a whole lot, of absurd history.
