Review # 1 was written on 2013-10-01 00:00:00 Martin Graham This was actually a pleasant surprise. I've been reading books about the Yucatán for some time now, ever since traveling there twice in the last year. This is a very well written travelogue with an emphasis on the natural world of the peninsula and the conservation that is or is not being carried out to preserve the wildlife and the habitat of the region. Even though the author considers himself a bit of a misanthrope he spends quite a lot of the time describing the people he meets and the lives they live on that cenote-pocked limestone shelf. There is a melancholy shadow to the story as the author lost his partner of many years about a year before he left on this trip. It is okay though and adds to the wabi sabi feel of the journey and the place that is called the Yucatán. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-07-29 00:00:00 Randy Strickland The author describes wildlife preserves and research sites on the Yucatan peninsula in a lively if sometimes distracted manner. Curiously, the most entertaining part of the book for me was his descriptions of people, the one animal he claims not to admire. I had hoped that there would be more about the ancient Maya. |
