Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-14 00:00:00 Arturo Delrio Taylor, who has a Mohawk father has collected and illustrated origin stories from seven named tribes:Chuckchee, Cree, Mandan, Modoc, Mohawk, Osage and Zuni. the stories are intriguing and collected together are a valuable resource for beginning to expose non-native students to the diversity of Native American culture and belief. Backmatter includes brief descriptions of the tribes included. I do not know if Taylor faithfully or respectfully does justice to the tales. I wish she had included her source for the information-who told them to her? A negative review of her book 'PeaceWalker' the story of Hiawatha, fills me with misgiving. however, I could find no native review of Bones in the Basket. Not only do the stories reveal the diversity of origin stories, some also share similarities with many origin stories of other religions: floods, brother against brother, creation of man & then woman, woman taking from a tree, etc. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-05-27 00:00:00 Anca Joe This book was really good actually, at first I had my doubts and it took me a while to get hooked, but it definitely opened my eyes to the ways in which other people lived. Grinnell really did care about the wellbeing of the Blackfeet in a time when many others did not care at all about indigenous peoples. I almost would recommend reading the ending part of the book first when it talks about their ways of life before the stories so you get context and understanding behind a lot of the terms mentioned within the stories. |
