Robert Sward's Vancouver Island Poems: Anthology of Contemporary Poetry popped up in a library search, and I thought I might find something nifty. The most striking thing from my perch in 2021 is how little of the Island I recognized in this 1973 collection. One exception was Susan Goldwater's "Metamorphosis," which is about walking into the woods, arms thrown up, and feeling like a tree connected to everything. I still meet people who like that experience. Otherwise, a lot of these felt like riffing in a broadly, vaguely 1970s way. These ones I liked. -Susan Goldwater. "Metamorphosis. Pg. 38. -Lis Hall.
