I was deeply moved by Catherine Banks' play about the emotionally impoverished lives of rural Canadians whose world is as desolate as the forests they destroy for a living. Unlike some writers tackling the lives of working class people, Ms. Banks doesn't condescend ("Judith Thompson"), but rather works from a place of deep compassion for people in a world that seems devoid of options. Jamie is about to marry the high school girl he's been dating in search of some sense of belonging after having been deserted by his mother and rejected by his father. His only dream of a future is to become a heli-logger, something that seems far from his reach since he's a high-school drop out and doesn't have the money to study the field. His half-sister, Chicky, has been involved with a married man since she was 14. Their father cannot stop mourning the son who died as a child. And their friends are caught in similar dead ends. This would be a great play for a theatre with a young company, particularly one with working class roots, and I think would play well in the U.S.

Read this last semester for my drama course. It's all right, with a couple of great moments, but all in all it feels like the self-referential ho-hum Can-Con crap that's forced down my throat all the time. Ugh.
