You may say that the scenarios that play out in Judith Thompson's overwhelming Lion in the Streets are unlikely at best or impossible at worst, that life would never happen like that, but if that is something you say, then I say you are wrong. I have seen moments like this, even been involved in some, and shit like all this shit happens. It does. And therein lies the power of her play.

I don't often read plays but after Lion in the Streets, I'm definitely going to be looking for some more. I don't know how to describe this any other way than to say it was highly disturbing. The language is graphic and violent and there is nothing Thompson shies away from (including a man jacking off while forcing his fiance to relive a rape). It is these scenes - those that are unsettling and extreme but also horribly real - that makes me think Thompson writes like no other playwright. There is so much emotional depth, so much pain but also redemption, which really makes you reflect on the horrors of our society. It is such an intense play that I recommend it with caution but it is the writing more than anything - the powerful, painful and poetic writing - that I believe no one should miss out on.
