A much older man. Servants who disrespect protocol. A gruesome story surrounding the first concubine. A mother who ends her life. A girl who binds her feet. A girl who isn't considered a wife, but lesser... This play centers around Asian characters from the distant past who have few options, and only show a little interest in what they have, apart from the interest of love. from Act I SU-LING: I need more gold thread. MERCHANT LI: How very nice to see you too. (Beat.) Is that all that you would like? SU-LING: Yes. MERCHANT LI: Not interested in anything else? SU-LING: No. ... from Act II MING: There has been a delivery from the market. Your wedding linens have arrived. Your honourable grandmother is waiting for you in the sitting room. SU-LING: Wha-- Why are you telling me this only now? MING: I was waiting until you were finished eating. SU-LING: Stupid! You should have told me earlier. MING: My apologies. (Su-Ling downs her tea cup, hard.) SU-LING: You might as well eat the rest! MING: No thank you.
