Review # 1 was written on 2020-04-16 00:00:00 Brent Dunlevy Disappointing after the excellent volume 12 (1950). I do love Boucher's "The Quest for St. Aquin," however. |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-07-02 00:00:00 Donna Dziedzic This is quite a good anthology. I don't think that "Superiority" by Arthur Clarke deserves to be here. I also share Martin Greenberg's reservations about Kornbluth's "The Marching Morons," but I do think that granted the dubious premise, this is a very good story. I would have similar reservations about William Tenn's "Null-P," but that story is not intended to be taken seriously. My favorite stories here are "The Quest for St. Aquin" by Anthony Boucher, "With These Hands" by C. M. Kornbluth, and "Dune Roller" by Julian May. And, really, most of the other stories too. A word or two about the introductory material: I have read enough about Isaac Asimov to be convinced that he was probably a reasonably nice person. You would never know that from his consistently vainglorious comments. His introduction to "The Sentinel" in which he criticizes the film 2001: A Space Odyssey is smothered in self-regard. He is certainly entitled to think that the film was slow. His other comments are like those by people who give a book a bad rating on Amazon because it took too long to reach them. |
