I went on an 8-Day Silent Retreat a year ago that was built around the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. On that retreat, my prayer was so rich and the Lord's voice was so clear. Since then, my prayer has been relatively silent... until this book taught me how to pray in the style of Saint Ignatius all over again. My prayer has been exciting again, but the book itself is not exciting - and the endless examples that the author employs at times drove me a little crazy. Nonetheless, the author's language is clear, simple, and shares the truth that I needed to hear. I would recommend it.

I bought this book today because I want to strengthen my life of intimacy wit the Lord through prayer. What is there in Christian more than prayer? If you get to the heart of prayer you get to the heart of Christ directly. Now I have a Bible, how can I use it in prayer? This subject weighs always on me. Whenever a Muslim converts to Christianity and I want to disciple them I want them to use their Bible as an excellent tool of prayer. This book is so wonderful in that it shows us how to take a Gospel scene, a scene that we may have read zillions of times, and live that scene from within, as a participant of the event, as if it is happening today, just today. Words of Christ then feel every bit as alive, touching our hearts. We no longer feel passive to Scriptures or deal with them like a mantra of some kind, but we live the Gospel event from within. Jesus is no longer far away up in the sky but He is there right beside us. Our praying the Scripture can be at times more imaginative, at other times more reflective. We get "in the story" and we can "look Peter in the eyes". The book presents me with a challenge: can I be present to a Gospel scene and live it from within? With St. Anselm we can cry out to the Lord "I seek your face; your face, Lord, I desire".
