I traveled to Ozarks National Scenic Riverways this past summer and found this book at the National Park giftshop at Alley Spring and Mill. I am a sucker for bookstores with hard to find history books and admittedly many of them are very dry but this one was very well written and enjoyable. Written more than 20 years ago, it is a fairly comprehensive history of the region since the first settlers. This book seems to have been a labor of love for the author as she only published two other books. This book focuses primarily on the 19th century and early 20th century. As the title conveys the book covers the different buildings and landforms of yesteryear that can be visited today. This includes the surrounding wilderness, natural features and forests and buildings. It is essentially the right blend of history and travel. There are many sections on riverboating, springs, mines, mills, lumber camps, dams, lakes, caves, quarries, wagon trails, ghost towns, Civil War battles, outlaws, Civilian Conservation Corps. There was even one section on pearl harvesting from the White River that was truly fascinating. If you are interested in places like the Ozarks and have ever wondered what a 'Chinese Wall' is or 'Bowin and Spikin' or 'Noodlin' or 'Johnboats' are then you will enjoy this book. |
