Review # 1 was written on 2007-12-31 00:00:00 Brian Ashby a small group of young people in an ed koch nyc, summer. though it made it hard to get through because such focus doesn't make for momentum, i liked its detailed interiority--all the little sex-thoughts and power-seeking gestures and micro-motivations of each eyelid and seatshift. was impressed with how this duras-influenced work claims that for its focus, but was less trusting of the confidence in which it made some of its pronouncements. insights aren't cheap or cheaply won--but maybe not as sharp as they need to be... the taboo of a child's sexuality and the adults' responses to it also didn't move me so much as a subject. though gutsy to take it on, the take felt finally a little superficial... the book does though manage a self-authorized coolness, a bravada that's pretty charismatic... |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-05-26 00:00:00 Nicholas Steele Romance writer Sasha Blake is living quietly in Martha's Vineyard when her motorcycle skids into Doug Donohue's Maserati. Doug's a world weary clothing designer. The two start seeing each other but scenes from her books start to happen and it looks like someone wants to murder her using her own plot lines. Good. |
