Review # 1 was written on 2019-04-22 00:00:00 Cameron Roberton A cool book that provides a deep dive into a topic that, at least in terms of non-specialist literature, has little written about it that's not too hard to get hold of. It has a great collection of photos and illustrations, and more than enough detail about Northwest Coast aboriginal culture, including houses, crests, myths, etc. Plus quite a lot on the technology and technique involved, and a comparison of northern, central, and southern styles. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-04-29 00:00:00 Allie Miller I suspect Rosenberg is not as well remembered as his frenemy Clement Greenberg because he didn't make big theoretical statements. But that's what makes reading him now such a joy (as opposed to reading Greenberg) - his beautifully written essays are based on observation and thought, not on sweeping generalizations and ideology. There is the occasional misstep, like his belief that the complaints of minorities and feminists were misguided, but those are very rare, and every essay and review in this collection has some brilliance to impart. |
