After reading the excerpt from "My Side of the Mountain" called "My Mountain Friends" with my junior high students, I became interested in Jean and her books. I realized that I haven't read any of her books! I am very well aware of them but just had never picked any of them up to read. I ordered a number of books from the library to start me on my latest quest and "Jean Craighead George" is part of The Learning Works/Meet the Author Series and the first of which I have read. It is a fine read and very inspiring. I loved reading about her childhood experiences in Ottawa and by the Potomac, growing up in Washington, DC, living with various animals, and all her struggles and successes. What an amazing role model! Much to my dismay, I discovered this morning that she had passed on just a couple of weeks ago at the age of 92. A life well-lived. Her mother and aunt had a great motto: "Be different. Never follow the crowd," and that, Jean Craighead George never did...

i have to read this book--it was written by my 8th grade english teacher in aurora, ohio. daniel dyer is the reason i love english literature, william shakespeare, charlie chaplin movies, why i chose to be an english major in college, love poetry and why i know that jack london, because "call of the wild" turned him into a crazy man, imagined himself a wolf and ate raw meat. everyday. for years. and i believe he died of malnutrition.
