The book overall was okay. The author was very long winded and some of her college-level information and lingo went a bit over my head. It was a book definitely not written for an eight-grade level. The topic being extremely interesting to me is honestly what saved the book. But, Aubrey Burl was still able to make me reach the end of her strictly informational text without my eyes crusting over and falling out. That's a good thing. I think that if the book have been brought down to my level even just a little bit more, it would've made a whale of a difference.

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what to write'the book was fun to read (creative, imaginative interpretation, interesting subject) and yet simultaneously difficult (the writing desperately needed better editing, and the author tended to get carried away by her own arguments into speculations that, while interesting, were dubious at best given the evidence). Her argument develops along two lines: first, that there is evidence for a feminist reading of the Egyptian New Year ceremony in which the wife acts as both queen and priestess, including a complex ritual anointing of the Pharaoh; second, that elements of this Egyptian ceremony and anointing can be found in texts such as John (the woman at the well and the woman who anoints Christ) and the Gospel of Philip. She also develops an interesting connection with alchemy and the continuation of mystery wisdom, which she plans to take up in greater detail in her next book. Definitely worth taking a look at'just be prepared.
