Reading this book was the most painful experience I've ever had. Ever. It is a 712 page book about the history of prostitution. It outlines the causes and effects of the sex trade among different countries and cultures: Jews, Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, Greece, Rome, Christians, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Belgium, New York, and many more. I read this book for a research paper for a high school AP class. Because it is so long and tedious, I only read chapters that were relevant to my paper, and I truly cannot imagine making it through this book from start to finish. The author is very biased against prostitution, often making derogatory remarks about the sex trade and sex workers. However, this is understandable, since the book was written in the 1800's, where people were much more conservative. Despite being hard to read, this is a well-crafted book, and if you are interested in the history of prostitution, you may enjoy reading it. It is packed full of fascinating details and historical facts, and Sanger does a remarkable job of illustrating how widespread and enormous prostitution really is, and stringing together the growth and spread of prostitution throughout the centuries. I would recommend this book only if you are a strong reader who won't be offended by very prejudiced writing... This book is a feminist's worst nightmare. However, if you want to learn more about prostitution through the ages, this is the book for you!

The world seen & judged through Christian western eyes. Reveals much more than prostitution: marital habits, sexually transmitted diseases, extermination of the original inhabitants and more. Fascinating but not prurient.
