Review # 1 was written on 2020-10-16 00:00:00 Cameron Roberton An excellent introduction to Russian culture and history, showing bygone Russia in all its ethnic and cultural diversity. The authors write convincingly that Russia at the end of the nineteenth was full of contradictions, both backward and progressive, primitive and sophisticated, and partly oriental and partly westernised. A reader may wonder whether Bolsheviks were a modernising force or perhaps they were barbarians who killed a Russia that was on the verge of developing into a modern and prosperous nation?

Review # 2 was written on 2020-01-02 00:00:00 Timothy Gohr A beautiful photo album which contains pictures not often seen in other publications. It is entirely focused on "lower" parts of the society, with the exception of photographs of clergy and educational institutes near the end. Not much is provided as a background to the pictures unfortunatelly.
