Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-06 00:00:00 Shawn Shafer A marvelous read, truly. As a devotee of Adler, I was delighted to find so much of her wisdom and techniques encapsulated in this small book. Obviously, every acting method has its devotees and many others who don't find it works for them - that is the nature of acting: we're all striving for the same endpoint, but by very different methods. Yet I think everyone can benefit and surely no actor would dismiss some of Adler's key points. Former student Joanna Rotte gives a comprehensive but easy-to-read guide to Adler's life, beliefs, her class structure, texts and exercises she used, and - ultimately - presents a winning argument, with each chapter punctuated by simple "principles" which distill the summaries into one sentence. It's obviously not a substitute for experience and training, but - for intermediate actors - it's a worthy discussion of the subject of acting and character creation. Rotte tries to use Adler's actual words or methods wherever possible, and the result is very enjoyable indeed. |
