Review # 1 was written on 2016-03-29 00:00:00 James Schiavi This is a two part book, the first being a history of Company E, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the 1862 Dakota War and the Civil War. This account is written by a member of said company. The narrative is a bit dry, and matter of fact, but it's interesting if you like the subject. The author also included a detailed roll of the members of the company, including their country/state of origin, which is really interesting from a demographic standpoint. Co E. was nicknamed the Sigel Guards (for prominent German-American politician/general Franz Sigel), and was made up largely of German or German-speaking immigrants (largely Prussians, but from other places as well). The second part of the book is a memoir by the captain of Co. G, 6th MN, of his participation in an 1863 punitive expedition against the Dakota. This narrative is written is more entertaining prose, and is a more detailed account than the first history in this book. The author's views of Dakota territory (modern-day South Dakota) and the Native Americans, besides his relation of his military experiences enliven the tale. |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-09-08 00:00:00 Harry Laquintano The company barely did anything in the Civil War, so this book is of no real value. |
