Review # 1 was written on 2017-12-29 00:00:00 Robert Whyte I enjoyed learning about the changes in the Spanish language over time from Latin to modern Spanish, and how other languages have influenced each dialect of Spanish. I enjoyed breaking apart the roots and affixes to think about the meaning if the words and passages. It was cool to be able to read, and understand, a snippet of Portuguese and other Latin-based languages, based on a new found understanding of the languages' morphemes... I recommend reading an Intro to Linguistics book before reading this one because it uses a lot of terminologies and builds on concepts that a beginner might not understand without first building a basic foundation of linguistic concepts and vocabulary. |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-07-07 00:00:00 Harold Simpson I learned a lot about the History and manifestations of Spanish both in peninsular Spain and Latin America. Though a bit outdated in some of its information as many things have changed since the 1980's in regard to the use of Spanish it is still the most comprehensive authority on Spanish Dialectology. Personally I enjoyed the chapters on the different Amerindian Languages that have influenced the uses of Spanish in the Americas the most both for their historical and linguistic value. |
