The pictures show the effort that went into the art in making these buildings, which are now in parts that people rarely venture to, let alone appreciate. This book inspired me to note a few towns that I hope to make a special visit. There is a short essay with the pics. One item examined is 'Why did the business in the small towns die?' The remaining town folk easily answered that, In the '50s we got cars. Every couple of weeks we'd drive to Waco and stock up. Mom could buy for 50 cents what cost 2 dollars in town.' I thought that was an interesting insight given the recent propensity to blame big box stores for small town woes. |
