Review # 1 was written on 2010-02-26 00:00:00 David Boling I liked the argument presented in this book about the transformation of Chicago. Unlike the traditional narrative, Rast includes human agency in this tale of economic transformation. It wasn't impersonal economic forces that stripped Chicago of its manufacturing base, especially its dynamic downtown manufacturing sectors, but human actions instead. Long before the decline in manufacturing really set in, City Hall was at work with real estate developers to rid downtown of the unsightly mess of factories. There is some hope to this tale as well. Planned Manufacturing Districts, explained in more detail in an article he wrote, provide the opportunity for small manufacturers to stay in the downtown core.
