Barely comprehensible today. I like reading old dusty legal works about once a year…this one is short, which is its main virtue. For a book composed of lectures, it’s pretty unreadable. The first chapter was just pointless. The second chapter, outlining the philosophy of how law is made was a bit better. The book is at its best when discussing specific subject areas but it’s still hard to follow…I would probably get more out of it if I read it again, but that would be too much like law school. Basically, it seemed like the author liked to hear himself talk and didn’t overly edit the lectures for publication. There are better books and authors on the topics. That said, it was interesting to see the legal thought behind the topics circa 1920 and see the outlines of what some topics were like a century ago. In short, though I find the subject matter interesting, I ended up disappointed as I though it would be better written. So, I give this one a 2. Nice ideas bad writing, in fact, the kind of writing law review articles have become…

The first three chapters alone were better than, and made more sense than, my entire law school course on Jurisprudence.
