Review # 1 was written on 2020-10-05 00:00:00 Joe Aleman This text delivers on the promise of the title: it calls into question the nature of both writing and its instruction, which are both so often taken as assumed constants in the American university system. It includes excessively extensive literature reviews on a wide variety of topics, from a wide variety of fields, and from a diverse collection of authors, but each review leads to a fresh take on how we could—or should—be thinking of writing studies, both as a field and as an individual practice. If I were to teach an introduction to writing studies for graduate students, I would present this text shortly after midterms, just to take all my students' thinking from earlier readings and put them in a blender. |
