Review # 1 was written on 2013-03-21 00:00:00 Jonathan Tumin Altogether, I found this to be a decent book. It basically sticks to a timeline structure, starting with Plato and ending with Nussbaum. All of the selections are politically based and the major philosophers are always followed by two additional passages from other, lesser-known philosophers, usually from a feminist or multicultural standpoint. With some of these passages being from modern minds, while others from ancient history, it certainly breaks the common concept that sexist and racist values existed because the people "simply didn't know any better." It's a decent book to check out. My one big complaint, however, is some of the translations. Especially for the ancient crew, the translations were pretty nasty compared to ones I've seen for, say, Grube.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-11-24 00:00:00 Toni Calvert The two stars is mainly due, as others have stated, to the fact this was rather dated. Many of us who lived through the 80s can find enjoyable nostalgia, but there was a lot of cultural horror, too. I read the updated (still dated) version, which extends the articles enclosed to the far-flung year of 1998. My favourite article was the final one in which Susie gives a blistering reply to a call-in she received on Dan Savage's "Love Live" radio program. The caller questioned her right to consider herself a "lesbian sex expert" when she had "been a bisexual breeder for years". Fuck it. I'm adding another star for that article alone.
