Generally, I really enjoyed this book, which contains newspaper reports, proceedings of the House of Commons, and other contemporary witnesses to the trial and execution of Charles I. The material has been rendered into modern spelling, and apparently a few archaic verb forms have been changed: a sensible editorial decision. There is a decent introduction, and enough commentary to understand the context. Two criticisms stand, which lose the book a five-star rating: firstly, for its relative short length, the book is fairly pricey. That's obviously not the authors' fault, and presumably a facet of the fact that contemporary source history is hardly a best-selling option (even though, as this book shows, it can be perfectly understandable). However, I also feel that more material could (if available!) have been included, not only to beef the book up to better merit its price, but also to present a more distributed representation of the opinions held. As it is, the procedural documents (mainly from the House and the army) are obviously republican and, I assume for balance, the reportage is largely sympathetic to Charles. I would have liked to have seen more republican commentary, as well as any dissenting institutional voices. Of course, these materials may not exist. Worth a buy, then. I got the Kindle edition, which was well formatted and retained the illustrations, which are nicely chosen.

Ok I give. I tried really hard to read this book because it's been sitting on my shelf for well over 10 years, but I can't do it. It's so so so so dry. I learned a lot, and I'll keep it around in case I need to know anything in particular, but Spain is so much more interesting than this. Why does it need to read like a text book?
