This is an academic book but it is readable and understandable to this non-anthropologist. It goes some way to explaining the strange energy and power that El Alto and its people have, and the structures that allow people to get on their despite its apparently disorganised nature. It gives insight into the Bolivian peoples' successful opposition to privatisation of their gas, water and other natural resources. Also covers the nature of democracy (representative and social movement versions) and workers organisation in the informal sectors (i.e. the market traders). If you're interested in Bolivia, you want to read this book.

This is an excellent study of racism in Brazil. Sheriff makes a distinction that other scholars before her time had not made, that is the distinction between the descriptive and prescriptive claims of democracy racial. In this way she asserts that democracia racial is a myth and also a dream.
