Another good title in the 'Animal' series. I highly enjoyed this one. Improvements from prior titles; -Another big step in MacYoung's shifting of focus from the physical act of self-defense into the territory of awareness, prevention and de-escalation. In fact this entire book is about those topics. This is the first "Animal" title that I would recommend to the layperson, as it contains information that would help an individual stay safe when out in public no matter how pacifistic they happen to be. -More streamlined language, although the stories are still here. However, most of them are just plain funny, regarding instances from MacYoung's past that don't have much to do with fighting, but rather the weird stuff that can happen to a person who elects to dwell out on the fringe. As someone who has done a bit of crazy stuff myself, the stories in here are both hilarious and authentic. -A very good, expanded section on violence and gender. MacYoung covers several important topics, but my favorite was introducing how (surprise!) women can be violent, too, and how its important to check their body language/behavior for potential attack indicators (as well as what those might look like). Some of this is a bit dated (the original text was published in 1992), but most of the information still holds up. In the end, I can't think of someone who wouldn't benefit from reading this, although almost even more than the first book Cheap Shots, I highly recommend crime authors give this one a look-see. There's an extensive section on how "fringe" environments function, what the social rules tend to look like and how a person has to act when in one, as well as the different types of "rough places". When paired with MacYoung's stories from his past, there's all sorts of great plot-hooks and story starts to be had here. But also, if you're an average person who wants to be safer but doesn't want to learn how to make people bleed, this is a great title for you.

The blues tell the truth; this guy teaches it. This book isn't about mystical insight; it's about saving your life … for real. And here's what the legendary street warrior has to say about teaching children: "I believe in violence toward adults, but children are off limits. Hitting kids is no fun; they can't hit back. Hmmm, maybe that explains why kids are the targets of violence."
