Me Llamo Gabriela/My Name Is Gabriela: La Vida de Gabriela Mistral/The Life of Gabriela Mistral is a children's picture book written by Monica Brown and illustrated by John Parra. It is a biographical picture book of Gabriela Mistral - the first Latina Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature. Mid-September to Mid-October, at least in my part of the world is Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, which I plan to read one children's book, particularly a biography, which pertains to the subject everyday this month. Therefore, I thought that this book would be apropos for today. Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, known by her pseudonym Gabriela Mistral, was a Chilean poet-diplomat, educator and humanist. In 1945 she became the first Latin American author to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature, for her lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions, has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world. Some central themes in her poems are nature, betrayal, love, a mother's love, sorrow and recovery, travel, and Latin American identity as formed from a mixture of Native American and European influences. Brown's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. Brown does a wonderful job of articulating Mistral's literary style - even including some of her poems. A biography and notable moments in her life could be found in the backmatter. The text is written in blocks of English and Spanish with words of both languages sometimes incorporated into the page design. Parra's simple illustrations, which appear to be painted on wood, go well beyond complementing the text rather well. The premise of the book is rather straightforward. The story begins with Gabriela's childhood and an explanation of her pen name. It goes on to describe her home and village located near the Andes Mountains in Chile, and different experiences that she had while growing up. Gabriela taught herself to read so that she could read other peoples' stories and also so that she could tell her own. As a little girl she would play school with other children and she always pretended to be the teacher, whom she eventually becomes. All in all, Me Llamo Gabriela/My Name Is Gabriela: La Vida de Gabriela Mistral/The Life of Gabriela Mistral is a wonderful biographical picture book of Gabriela Mistral - the first Latina Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature.
