Review # 1 was written on 2019-03-30 00:00:00 Rita Blair A short book about the history of a small community on the South Kohala Coast of the island of Hawaii from the arrival of the first Europeans, Captain Cook (we tried to find the monument when we were there) and the reign of Kimg Kamehameha (we participated in the annual celebraion to honor him) and later missionaries came and started a church, one of the oldest churches on the island. It has been a fishing village, an area of saltmaking, a sugar plantation, a honey farm, a feeding stop for cattle drives and most recently a residential community. Despite adversities ranging from droughts through tsunamis (1946 and 1960), fires, strong winds, storms and volcanic eruptions there has never been a time, when Puako has been completely deserted by its inhabitants. Always the residents were able to evacuate but there was often great loss of property. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-04-30 00:00:00 April Reed This book taught more about the history of a place I love. Not fabulously written, but informative. |
