At times the writing was super dry and needlessly dense and super scholarly sounding for things that could have been said in a shorter manner. Also, some typos so it makes me question the translations and the rest of the summary/discussion around them. Probably one of the most annoyingly written textbooks to me since as an English major I think this book would benefit from some copy editing. Also, this book is meant to create a good foundation for understanding Han culture, but I think the language of the text makes it difficult to do that. If this book is meant for introductions to Han culture and Chinese culture in general, I think it needs to be written simpler to get these difficult concepts across. Convoluted language along with concepts that are foreign make it extremely hard to process information. Perhaps it's because my class read it within a month or so and left little time to digest information, but as an English major with some understanding of Chinese before this class, even I had difficulty understanding this text.

The Han Dynasty felt more dynamic than the Confucius limit that one thinks of the time.
