Review # 1 was written on 2019-06-04 00:00:00 Sokhom Phan The compiler of these stories went to Lesotho on a Fulbright Scholarship in the 1990s and organized a group of locals to write their own stories. These stories have been translated into English and make up this book. It's a brilliant idea for a book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-01-23 00:00:00 Cherri Sandler A collective effort that is truly 'own voices', a group of Basotho women wrote stories of their own lives or women they know about life in Lesotho. Many of these women-centered stories include 'Sesotho-ised English' and as Kendall says, "This collection is therefore a hybrid: a bridge, perhaps, between orature and literature. At the simplest level it is story-telling made solid in print." An interesting look at the life and culture of Basotho women. |

Review # 4 was written on 2017-07-09 00:00:00 David Viars Very interesting Christian country, mountainous and surrounded on all sides by South Africa. Perhaps the way muslin and Christian men treat women has more to do with country or origin than religion. I just don't know. Worth reading. |

Review # 6 was written on 2011-11-14 00:00:00 Romel Wrighton Joalokaha e le buka e ngotsoeng ka basali ba Lesotho, ho thata ho 'na ho amohela tse ling tsa lintho tse ngotsoeng ka bukeng hobaneli hlaha ka tsela e fapaneng le eo ke tsebang mosali oa Mosotho. Lesotho is a small country located inside South Africa. The book is about class dynamics and how it affects women in Lesotho. Basali! means Women! This is gesture for astonishment by women in this part of the world. Great piece for sociological research. |
Review # 7 was written on 2020-12-14 00:00:00 Eloy Lopez This novella is a book of short stories about the women of Lesotho. Told in their own words - and then translated into English by family and friends - it gives insight into the lives of women living in this small Country in South Africa. These were interesting stories. They are a little rough - as stories are when told second hand and then translated. But I do love first hand accounts, especially from women, in any of these countries, so this book is a treasure. |
