Review # 1 was written on 2015-06-11 00:00:00 Charles Khouw This book is *such* a revelation, and go figure'it was published in 2002, the first year I started teaching high school English in a public school setting. That year was the real beginning of my belief that Writing and Reading Workshop just isn't compatible with the modern, mainstream high school structure. And boy, was I wrong. Thirteen years later, I would say I'm on an almost full swing back to the Workshop model (thank you, Penny Kittle!). If I would have found this book, who knows what I could have done. It's a shame this book isn't as known as it is. An absolute gem of a book! |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-08-08 00:00:00 KAZUMI TSUGAWA This really offered me effective suggestions for assessing reading and writing among high school students. Also, Mahoney's voice is warm and quotable. His explanation of why being positive with students is crucial makes complete sense. If you're thinking about shifting to portfolio assessment, this is a good place to look for one teacher's practice. |
