This is a favourite book. Needs a re-read. Page 17 Adventures in Afghanistan. Hardback edition Octagon press 1990. 'The Sheikh , while he maintained a considerable retinue and circle of traditional Sufi study soon showed himself to be capable of dealing with enquiries into his system, couched in almost any terms. ‘People come here from all over the place, full of ideas that this or that technique is a Sufi one', he told me. 'But what matters is that the teaching, the Ta’alim, should be given in such a way as to cause the possible effect, just as a doctor will use a medicament in accordance with the needs of the patient- if such a remedy is indicated. We are such doctors.' And the others? ‘We are not discussers, people of the tongue, so we can only tell you something useful to you. Do you visit a doctor to discuss others’ theories of medicine or to obtain help?’ ...............Page 18. 'Sheikh Daud maintained a guest house which was usually filled with people who came to hear his discourses. These talks, though they very often seemed to be general rather than specific, were yet said to be directed at the people who were present, and to be of great use to them. This convention, or reality, is, of course, almost completely unknown in the West. Only neurotics among us imagine that people are addressing them personally when seemingly voicing general remarks. Yet I saw no sign of neuroticism among the Afghan disciples. So the Sheikh did, in fact, as all believed, ‘employ medicine and not discuss it.’ An extract from Adventures in Afghanistan by Louis Palmer. A mighty interesting read. Recommended.
