Review # 1 was written on 2008-12-26 00:00:00 Jim Lowens I'm not a beekeeper, nor do I intend to be, especially after reading this wonderful old book (published in 1924, Blackie & Sons Limited, Great Britain). Found this well preserved hardcover first edition in a free library box. Here is the part I loved the most: "The swarming of bees has always been such an extraordinary phenomenon that, as far back as we can trace the history of bee-keeping, there have been special laws relating to it. Legally, if a swarm of bees leaves a hive, it belongs to the owner of the hive as long as he keeps it in sight. Hence he must follow it over hedge and ditch, and even through private grounds, and in fact wherever it goes, or he may lose the ownership of it. No one may prosecute for trespass even if the follower of a swarm enters a private house. No doubt this gave rise to the old custom of 'tanging the bees.' As soon as a swarm left the hive, the good housewife would seize a metal tray or the frying-pan and follow the swarm, banging on her tray with the door key. Neighbours were warned in this way that a swarm was abroad and that the owners knew of it and were following." |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-08-18 00:00:00 Bandy Smith Humorous, but not the most practical or in-depth book on taxidermy. I was a little disappointed. |
