I read an interview last week with Carson Ellis where she named Tony Ross as one of the illustrators that enchanted her as a child, specifically Hugo and the Oddsock, so I found the only Hugo book we had in our library consortium and put it on hold. It's pretty delightful! It does the thing that I love about children's books where things are stated plainly in silly situations. There is just enough whimsy and just enough practicality to make it a satisfying read. The illustrations have a wonderfully saturated palette, and are done in a sketchy pen outline with watercolor. My favorite illustration is of this scene: "...the mouse found himself looking down on a vast room. In the middle, a computer chattered away madly, sending red tape streaming out onto the floor. Lots of Santas were running about, peering at the red tape, then scribbling addresses on Christmas boxes. It seemed that everyone has his own Santa. There were cat Santas, dog Santas, all sorts of animal Santas, even an elephant Santa. Easter Bunnies only added to the confusion, getting their squashy Easter eggs mixed up with everything."

Puppy mischief runs rampant as Biscuit's owner celebrates Hanukkah with friends. Flaps extend the artwork and reveal Biscuit's latest mischief. Fun read aloud for PreK-2.
