inspired to search for more of Wink's work after reading a short selection in The Impossible Will Take a Little While by Paul Rogat Loeb some quotes, paraphrases, and thoughts: p. 9 - "The issue is not, What must I do in order to secure my salvation? but rather, What does God require of me in response to the need of others? It is not, How can I be virtuous? but How can I participate in the struggle of the oppressed fora more just world?" p. 13 - antistenai in the King James Bible = "resist not evil." Wink interprets that as shifting "nonviolent resistance into docility." histemi is a word of violent rebellion, armed revolt, uprising, insurrection. Better to say Do not react violently to Evil. possible responses to evil: passivity / violent opposition / Jesus' Third Way, i.e., militant nonviolence p. 14 - King James' ulterior motive is to preserve kingship and monarchy; Jesus' 3d Way could jeopardize that position, hence the obfuscation. p. 15 - another option: "Do not react reflexively to evil." p. 19 - clowning is the oppressed person's power. From the Talmud: "If your neighbor calls you an ass, put a saddle on your back." "The Powers That Be literally stand on their dignity. Nothing depotentiates them faster than deft lampooning." p. 22 - "Can people who are engaged in oppressive acts repent unless they are made uncomfortable with their actions?" "Loving confrontation can free both the oppressed from docility and the oppressor from sin." pp. 24-5 - other examples of nonviolent reaction: (a) Alagamar, Brazil: peasants swarm town hall demanding to be jailed with the others (B) during Vietnamese conflict, U.S. woman claims Vietnamese orphans on income tax return (C) in ancient times, Jews demand death rather than break religious law by displaying Roman military standards as idols (D) in WWII, Danish king attends synagogue to pretest arm bands p. 25 - importance of repeating stories of creative reaction to oppression is important for all, because it does not come naturally and we need all the examples we can get to help keep the non-violent reaction in our minds. This is the idea that gripped me and intrigued me so.

Outstanding, immediately practical, eminently digestible little tome with (unfortunately) direct application to the current state of the world in 2017. I'd call it a "quick read" except that it's so jam packed with profound passages that it took a while to get through, what with having to stop and reflect and copy a paragraph or page into my journal.
