The photos in this book came from the same cache of old negatives found just in time as the ones in The Chrysler Building: Creating a New York Icon Day by Day , but while so many of The Chrysler Building's photos were interesting even before you read the captions at the end of that book most of the photos in New York, Empire City: 1920-1945 really need to be viewed alongside the text in the "Additional Information" section to make an impact, perhaps because the Chrysler Building photos took in smaller swaths and minutiae while Empire City most often shoots an entire building at once. Fortunately, the text in "Additional Information" is often very entertaining as well as informative, for example, its verdict on 30 Rockefeller Plaza: "Ornament: A-. Architecture: C+. Vision: A+." Sometimes the text points out things too small to notice in the photos, like the 104 small, gold-leafed sculptures of the god Mercury that used to top all the light poles around Rockefeller Center before they were replaced by utilitarian poles similar to what was used elsewhere in the city.
