A fascinating account of the TRC's formation and experiences, and the impact on other countries ( Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland and Rwanda). Alex is a lawyer, like my father, and this book reminded me of my father's writings - both he and Alex spent their lives fighting for democracy and one man one vote in Southern Africa. A sober, humble account of the world's only Truth and Reconciliation Commission ever established, that dealt with victims, perpetrators, private sector collusion, and gave amnesty for full confession. An in depth analysis of what is reconciliation and how a country can move towards healing and unite society after generations of conflict and hatred. It gives one hope for the future of South Africa, but also makes it clear just what is at stake for a country (such as the US, Yemen, and other conflict zones) if it allows injustices and division to persist, without taking action to heal society.

Love the work of ER Braithwaite. Very candid perception of Apartheid South Africa. Just goes on to show the frailty of man to end up coming with the most ludicrous concept of separation by virtue of the color of the skin. How more stupid can we get?
