Review # 1 was written on 2016-05-07 00:00:00 Fiona Bennett An effective and lucid overview of French territorial history from the reign of Charles the Bald as king of West Francia to Philip II Augustus's accession to the throne of France in 1180. The broad scope and the content's synthetic nature lend this book more to use a reference work than actual monograph that presents a singular, unique argument about this topic (the author herself references the "textbook format," of the book in the preface). That does not detract from the utility of this book, as it provides a handy overview of many aspects of French social and political life in the three centuries covered. Topics include aristocratic history with a socio-political bent (marriages, alliances, and the like), brief surveys of the histories of major French territories under the control of the French "princes," (Normandy, Aquitaine, Anjou, Burgundy, Toulouse, etc.), economic developments, and source criticism. A staple survey of medieval French political history.

Review # 2 was written on 2015-06-15 00:00:00 Howard Taylor نعم لقد وجّ كاتبنا العزيز بكلّ من مونتسكيو وميكافللي في الجحيم تماما كما فعلها من قبل أبو العلاء المعري في رسالة الغفران ... الأمر هنا يختلف جذريا فنحن إزاء حوار سياسي بين قطبين من أقطاب السياسة والتنظير بناء الدولة: مونتسكيو بنظامه التمثيلي الحرّ وميكافللي بنظريّة الغاية التي تبرّر الوسيلة التي أسقطها حقيقة على جميع المجالات منظّرا لنظام دكتاتوريّ صارم... من قرأ كتاب الأمير سيستمتع أكثر بقراءة هذا الأثر لأنه تجسيد للقوانين الواردة في الكتاب الأوّل ورغم ما يتّسم به منهج حواريّ إلا أن القارئ يجد نفسه إزاء محاججة أكثر منها محاورة لأن ميكافللي -الذي اضطلع بالمساحة النصيّة الكبرى- انبرى هنا مدافعا عن مذهبه شارحا لمونتسكيو تطبيقاته في ميدان الحرية والعدالة والقضاء والصحافة والجيش والأحزاب السياسيّة والميزانيات والنظام الضرائبي وعلاقة الدولة بالأديان ووسائل تحديث وتنظيم العلاقة بين الدولة والمواطن ... باختصار هذا الكتاب يصلح أن يكون البرنامج الانتخابي الأصدق لأنظمتنا العربيّة لأنه بالفعل يعدنا بمكان جميل في جهنّم "دولة الدكتاتوريّة المبرّرة"
