Wow! wish I would have read this book before any others when I was trying to figure out my first child's "problems". Now I see that the only problem has been his family trying to force, manipulate, and bribe him to eat more, go potty, or whatever. Had we all just left him to decide and discover things on his own perhaps he wouldn't be so "strong-willed" and "tantrum-prone". Instead we might say that he's a great self starter, a leader, and a creative independent child who is sensitive to his needs and the needs of others. I wish I could give a copy of this book to all grandparents and to every one who thinks their child is a difficult eater (...and those pesky pediatricians who made them think that because their child is "small" or "not gaining well" they need to supplement as if every child should be growing with and well above the fiftieth percentile on the charts. Did these docs fail statistics class?! 5th percentile means a child is the same size as 5% of the population and 95th percentile also means that the child is the same size as 5% of the population. It is neither bad nor good. It is simply just a number.) But I am a little nervous that this book would offend some people.

This book was an answer to so many of my new parent anxieties ! I was worried that my daughter didn't eat enough - like most mothers are... check My pediatrician stressed me out in her first months, repeating that she is not gaining weight fast enough... check I thought that the need for food grows constantly as the child grows, which is not the case... check I fussed and stressed and kept pushing food on her... check I was going mad trying to invent combinations of food she would actually accept... check I started to dread mealtimes... check This book covers all of this and more. So I read this book, realised that I have beenthe one with the unreasonabe expectations and I relaxed... Result: I started putting food in front of her and let her eat as much and as fast as SHE wants. I ate with her. I stopped stressing her and stressing myself. And - miracle - not only does she eat, but we both enjoy it ! no more fussing, no more crying. When she says no - we stop. No stress. If she eats less once, she catches up the next time... Thank you Dr. Gonzalez!
