Review # 1 was written on 2010-12-28 00:00:00 William Madden Interesting and digestible enough as a basic introduction to the history of Islamic law. Definitely has the author's own early 20th century paradigms of pro-rationalism (ie. Hanafi) and anti-traditions (everyone just say no to the "doctrinaire" Hanbalis), and other orientalist gems such as remarks on the "rigid authoritarianism" that's the essence of Shi'ism versus the tribal traditionalis in the Sunni schools and the "democratic" inclination of Kharijites (Coulson neglected to mention they also had a thing for political assassinations early on). |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-01-02 00:00:00 Chris Pidgeon This is a great collection of primary documents. The commentary is easy to read and offers an understanding of the time with very little imposing bias from the author. I appreciated the opportunity to form my own opinions about this time period through the selected documents. |
